Alliance for Strong Communities

Due to the serious fiscal crises facing local government and schools in the Eau Claire area, a group of concerned leaders have formed the Alliance for Strong Communities.

The goal is to look for ways to change the way taxes are distributed so those who create safe communities and educate children aren't forced to make drastic cuts.

The Alliance for Strong Communities is a regional network of organizations in the greater Eau Claire metropolitan area united to strengthen public structures and services in all local communities so that families and businesses can thrive. The goals of the Alliance are to:

a. Fortify community awareness around the importance of the public sector and how the state’s current revenue system contributes to local budget problems;

b. Engage community organizations and associations with diverse backgrounds to advocate for change in the state revenue system; and

c. Develop a state fiscal policy agenda that will expand the revenue base and ensure fairness to all taxpayers by reducing reliance on local property tax.

Community organizations formed the Alliance in the fall of 2008. Current participating organizations include:

Altoona School District

Chippewa Valley Technical College

City of Altoona

City of Eau Claire

Eau Claire Association of Educators

Eau Claire Chamber of Commerce

Eau Claire County

Greater West Central Area Labor Council, AFL-CIO

Eau Claire Schools Classified Staff Federation, AFT Local 4018

Eau Claire Area School District Board of Education

Realtors Association of Northwestern Wisconsin

The Alliance hosted a public forum on August 4, 2010 in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. The purpose of the forum was to convene a community discussion about the ongoing nature of the national recession, the arguments for a second round of federal recovery funding, and concerns about the deficit. The program included an update on the impact of recovery funding on the local community and table discussions about what federal policies would be best for the greater Eau Claire community.
