Update October 26, 2017

Improvements are being planned by the City to another bridge on Grand Avenue located in downtown Eau Claire. The Grand Avenue Footbridge stretching across the Chippewa River is scheduled to have its concrete deck and railing replaced in 2018. The piers and steel girders of this "bicycle and pedestrian bridge" are in good shape and will remain.

Bridge Deck Replacement

The staff of the Engineering Department have been working collaboratively with engineers from Ayres Associates on the bridge deck replacement. Improvements you will see on the new deck include a wider walking area - two feet wider than the existing bridge deck!

This bridge is a vital part of Eau Claire's spirit with its use in various events held throughout the year. One such event includes the "Grand Evening on the Bridge," which is organized by Downtown Eau Claire Inc. The newly rehabilitated bridge will provide a "grand" link between downtown Eau Claire and the community, and the wider walking area will make the events this bridge is a part of much more enjoyable for the community.

Overlooks & Lighting

The safety railing along the new bridge is going to match the railing within the downtown area that is currently along the Chippewa & Eau Claire Rivers. The new bridge will also have a total of six overlooks to be constructed at each pier allowing the many sights of downtown Eau Claire to be seen easily from the bridge. The bridge currently has only two overlooks.

The new bridge will feature decorative lighting to keep it safe for use at night.
