The Northwest Wisconsin Hazardous Materials Task Force is one of two Type I teams established by the State of Wisconsin to respond to hazardous materials releases/incidents that threaten life, property and/or the environment. The State contracts with the entities representing the Northwest Team (Cities of Eau Claire, Chippewa Falls, Superior, and Ashland and Counties of Barron and Dunn) to provide this response to a 22-county area. The team has 42 members, with 29 from Eau Claire Fire and Rescue and 13 from Chippewa Falls Fire and Emergency Services. Team members also provide consultation for emergency responders concerning haz mat situations they may encounter, in addition to providing outreach presentations to law enforcement, emergency medical services, fire departments, and local government personnel throughout the response area. City of Eau Claire tax dollars are not used to operate the team; the State of Wisconsin provides funding.
