Athletes Performing Their Best On and Off the field.

Life of an Athlete (LOA) was selected by the Alliance based on local data and its proven effectiveness. The LOA program, created by John Underwood, includes research on the impact of alcohol and marijuana, sports nutrition, recovery, and sleep on athletes. It also calls special attention to a Stanford University study about the negative impact of alcohol on the teen brain. LOA is being used in schools across the county to call for more consistent athletic codes and engage both parents and teens in committing to healthy lifestyles that support optimal athletic performance.

Since the fall of 2011:

  • Eau Claire County high schools strengthened their athletic codes based on Underwood's recommendations.
  • Local physicians have begun to share Life of an Athlete information with student athletes during sport physicals and check-ups.
  • In July of 2014, 80 select student athletes participated in the LOA Leadership Summit where they learned how to support teammates making safe healthy lifestyle choices.
  • In April 2015, the first "Spring Training" was held to reinforce leadership skills among LOA Student Athlete Leaders.
  • In October of 2015, 78 select student athletes participated in the LOA Fall Leadership Training where they learned how to support teammates making safe healthy lifestyle choices.
  • Parents and athletes continue to learn more about Underwood's research at code signing meetings and at team practices.

We need your energy and ideas to support teams, coaches and parents as we take additional steps to reduce underage drinking. We invite you to get involved in short or long term projects to help student athletes avoid drug and alcohol use and perform their best on and off the field.
