A Sustainable City
| The City recognizes its role in being a driver of change. In May 2009, the City of Eau Claire became an "Eco-municipality" by formally adopting The Natural Step (TNS) as an approach to sustainability.
Groundwork to date has been the development of an employee Green Team which focuses on greening the city government operations by using TNS and an amendment to the City's Comprehensive Plan. The new chapter, solely focused on sustainability, was added to the plan just in time for Earth Day 2009. The City is a Tree City USA and has been for the past 30 years. The City is also an "Energy Independent Community" aspiring to achieve 25% renewable energy by the year 2025.
