The activity of providing food for a specific event at a location other than the licensed restaurant on a contractual, prearranged basis to a predefined subset of the general public, such as invited guests to a wedding or similar celebration, or to participants in an organized group or activity.  Food is prepared at the licensed facility and transported to the private event.  Food preparation onsite is limited to reheating, hot holding, cold holding, and some limited cooking such as grilling steaks or hamburgers.  Catering does not include the sale of individual meals directly to the consumer.

A caterer may not prepare or store food and equipment in their own home.  A caterer must obtain a license for the facility where all food preparation and storage will occur.  This facility must meet the WI Food Code requirements.
