Personal Ice Safety Tips

  • Only use designated areas for ice activities.
  • Measure ice thickness in several different places
  • Have an emergency plan.
  • Stay of river ice!
  • Never go onto the ice alone, use the buddy system.
  • Dress properly & wear a floatation device.
  • Avoid alcohol. It slows your judgment & reaction time.
  • If you drive on ice, have a vehicle escape plan. For an easy exit have seatbelts unbuckled & windows open.
  • Avoid traveling on ice after dark.
  • Include a rope & other rescue equipment in your tool kit. Ice picks can break through ice or help you pull yourself out.
