EAU CLAIRE
LANDMARKS COMMISSION

Meeting of October 3, 2011

Members Present: Jenny Ebert, Katrinka Bourne, Patrick Kurtenbach, Carrie Ronnander, Kathy Mitchell

Members Absent:   Karen Nusbaum

Minutes.    The minutes of the September 12, 2011 meeting were approved as written.

The meeting was chaired by Jenny Ebert.

1. Discussion on Historic Preservation Presentation.

The Commission discussed the September 27th presentation focusing on the economic benefits of owning an older home or building.  Frank Butterfield from the National Trust for Historic Preservation and Jennifer Davel, Preservation Architect, from the Wisconsin Historical Society agreed to attend and speak.  The presentation was well attended and filmed for Community Television.  The Commission indicated that they should periodically sponsor informative sessions such as this as it was well received by those attending.

2. Discussion of Update of Landmarks Tour Booklet.

The Commission discussed the need to update the Landmarks Tour Booklet that was last updated in 2002.  The Commission discussed the possibility of working with the Historic Preservation Foundation to help fund an intern to work on the project.  The Commission felt that it would be good to wait to start this project until after the first of the year and attempt to schedule the work so that the project would not span over two internships.  The Commission indicated that they should consider adding a section focusing on the waterway plaques and also a section on landmark properties that have been demolished.  A new cover photo was also discussed.

3. Discussion of Entryway Repairs at 447 McKinley Avenue.

The owners of 447 McKinley Avenue inquired about problems they are experiencing with the brickwork for their front entryway.  Moisture is causing the bricks to separate and crack and the mortar is deteriorating.  The Commission discussed several alternatives and asked Pat to contact the owners.

4. Update on Landmark Activities and Properties.

A. Commission Vacancy.  The Commission discussed the current vacancy on the Commission due to the death of Barbara Lozar.  Pat noted that the Appointments Committee would be meeting on October 7th and would consider the Commission’s recommendation from their September meeting.

B. Update from Eau Claire Historic Preservation Foundation.  Pat Kurtenbach provided an update of Foundation activities, including the drafting of a new mission statement for the Foundation.

C. Report on Fall State Preservation Conference.  Pat Kurtenbach provided an overview of the State Preservation Conference held in Stevens Point on September 23rd and 24th.

There being no further business to come before the Commission, the meeting was adjourned at 5:20 p.m.
