New Downtown Bus Transfer Center to Open Monday!

New center will open September 29, 2025

Post Date:09/24/2025 11:13 AM

What began as a “temporary” solution in 1985 has now, after 36 years of service, been replaced with a new, permanent home for Eau Claire Transit riders. The City of Eau Claire is proud to announce the opening of its new downtown transfer center, a project that represents both progress and community investment. The first bus will roll out of the new center starting at 5:45 am on Monday, September 29th, 2025.

The new facility, made possible through a $5 million federal grant and city Tax Incremental Financing (TIF), reflects the growth and future of Eau Claire. It offers riders an inviting and accessible space with a sheltered waiting area, restrooms, and staff offices—modern amenities designed to enhance the transit experience, making it more comfortable and convenient.

Above the transfer center rises a new mixed-use development that includes a parking garage and much-needed housing. This commitment ensures that downtown Eau Claire remains a place where people of diverse incomes can live, work, and thrive.

The opening of the transfer center comes during a special milestone year—Eau Claire Transit’s 50th anniversary of serving the communities of Eau Claire and Altoona. From its earliest days to today’s system, Eau Claire Transit has been connecting people to work, school, shopping, and opportunity for half a century.

“This new transfer center is a step towards a more walkable community, more connection with our neighbors, and an investment to our downtown. We appreciate our business neighbors for their patience during construction.” said Katrina Running, Transit Manager.  “As we celebrate 50 years of transit service, we honor the thousands of riders that have taken the bus over the past few decades and we recognize that no matter your reason for riding, you deserve a welcoming space to wait for the bus.”

Opportunities for tours and open houses are forthcoming. Please follow Eau Claire Transit on Facebook for more updates.
