Chippewa River Update For Immediate Release

Recent heavy rain in the upper Chippewa River watershed is causing increased levels on the Chippewa River in Eau Claire.
At 8 a.m. the Chippewa River gauge at Grand Avenue read 774.39 feet, which is just over one (1) foot above flood stage.
For the safety of residents the following areas are closed:
- Chippewa River Trail
- Lighting along the Eau Claire river has been disconnected
- street underpasses
- Farwell St.
- Madison St.
- UW-Eau Claire Fine Arts Building
- Boat landing behind Hobbs Ice Arena
- Owen Park – including; lower levels, the tennis courts and parking lot are now closed
The City will continue to monitor the river closely and provide information and updates as necessary.
What Residents Can Do
When rivers are at an increased level they can contain debris and generate currents that are stronger, faster, and more unpredictable than normal which makes recreational use of the river unsafe.
