Dose of Reality

Safe use.       Safe storage.     Safe disposal.

Safe use...

A study published by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) found that when someone uses a narcotic painkiller for just one day, you only have a 6% chance of still using the drug a year later. When you take a painkiller for eight or more days, your likelihood of using the drug a year later rises to 13.5%. It is important to know that using a prescription painkiller for 31 days or more increases your chances of long-term opioid use to 29.9%. These medications can be highly addictive.

  • Take your medications only as long as they’re needed, and never more than directed by your prescribing medical professional.
  • Do not share your prescription painkillers or other medications with anyone.
  • Do not take someone else’s prescription medication.
  • Do not combine your prescription medications with alcohol or other drugs.

Safe storage...

Do you store your prescription opioids (or narcotics) and other medications in the medicine cabinet in your bathroom? You’re not alone – it’s a common practice, but storing your medications in an easily accessible place means they’re available for children, teens, or others to find and abuse.

In Eau Claire County, over 200 high school youth report misusing prescriptions drugs in the past month. The average age of first misuse is 13, while 35 kids reported first misuse at age 10 or younger! Nearly 1 in 4 teens say prescription medications are EASY to get, AND most that report misuse say either a friend gave it to them, or they got it from their own home, a friend's home, or a grandparent's home without permission.

  • Keep your medications out of sight
  • Keep your medication out of reach
  • Lock them up - in a lock box, or cabinet or drawer that locks!

Safe Disposal...

Unused prescription medications in homes create a public health and safety concern, because they can be accidentally ingested, stolen, misused, and abused.

Unused or expired medicine should never be flushed or poured down the drain. Removing potentially dangerous pharmaceutical substances from our state's medicine cabinets helps to prevent them from going into our water supply. Water reclamation facilities are not designed to remove all of them and trace amounts of pharmaceuticals are showing up in rivers and lakes around the world.
